How to Get Rid of That Bad Fridge Smell

How to Get Rid of That Bad Fridge Smell

It’s the job of your refrigerator to keep perishables fresh and safe for consumption. Even if you cover each and every dish, the smells of different types of food will inevitably escape and there are a number of foods that can make your fridge smell particularly bad. Fortunately, there is a way to get rid of that bad fridge smell.

Unplug and unpack

Unplug your refrigerator before you begin. This is to help save the motor since you will keep the doors open while you clean. Remove everything from your fridge and place all of your food in a cooler or coolers with ice. You can also use your kitchen sink. Just make sure that you clean it properly first.

Clean with baking soda

Add half a cup of baking soda to a tub (about the size of your kitchen sink) of warm water. Use this mixture to wash your fridge and don’t forget to remove any shelves and drawers too. Wipe down with clean water once you are done. Any removable parts should be dried properly before placing them back in the fridge. While you’re at it, clean the drip tray too. Take care because it usually contains dirty water and you don’t want it to spill.

Add an odour remover

Once it has done the trick, discard the baking soda. You can also leave an open box of baking soda in your fridge to absorb smells on a regular basis so that they don’t have the chance to set in. Change this baking soda as needed. White vinegar is another option when it comes to cleaning and refreshing your fridge. Leave an open cup in your fridge or dilute with water for cleaning. If you don’t have white vinegar or baking soda, you can also use a bowl of oats to absorb smells.

Fill your fridge

Once you are happy with the results, you can start packing your food back in your fridge. Remember to inspect each item and check expiration dates as well as quality as you go. Anything that does not look or smell good should be tossed. Strong smelling foods like fish and onions can make your whole fridge smell so make sure that you always use the right containers. If these foods can make your whole fridge smell bad, they can also affect the flavours of other foods in your fridge as well.
